Your clients may have spent decades preparing financially for retirement.
But being financially ready and being personally ready aren't the same thing.
A New Game Without a Scoreboard is a personal and honest exploration of the non-financial transition into retirement.
It's a resource financial advisors can share with clients to help start conversations about the part of retirement that doesn't appear in a financial plan.

I Thought I Was 100% Prepared for Retirement.
When I retired at 57 after a 30+ year corporate career, I had planned carefully, worked with a financial advisor, and was fortunate to have the resources to retire comfortably.
Financially, I was ready.
It turned out I wasn't entirely ready for retirement.
I hadn't prepared for how much of my identity was tied to my career, where purpose would come from, or how I would measure accomplishment without the old professional scoreboard to guide my days.
Those experiences eventually led me to write A New Game Without a Scoreboard.
It isn't a how-to guide or a prescription for the “right” way to retire. It's a personal and honest exploration of the non-financial transition into retirement.
The Financial Plan Can't Answer Every Retirement Question.
Financial preparation is essential. But when work ends, clients can find themselves confronting questions that don't appear on a balance sheet:
-
Who am I without my career?
-
What gives my days structure and purpose now?
-
How do I measure accomplishment when there is no longer a professional scoreboard?
-
How will retirement affect my relationships and connections with other people?
-
What do I actually want from the years ahead?
These are some of the questions I explore in A New Game Without a Scoreboard.
Not with formulas or ten-step solutions, but through stories, observations and reflections from someone who has experienced the transition himself.
A Different Kind of Client Resource
One that can add value to the retirement conversations you're already having.
Financial advisors are uniquely positioned to help clients prepare for one of life's biggest transitions.
A New Game Without a Scoreboard can complement that work by helping start conversations about the other side of retirement.
Clients Approaching Retirement
A thoughtful gift that encourages clients to begin considering the personal transition before their last day of work.
Newly Retired Clients
A reassuring reminder that adjusting to retirement can involve much more than adjusting to a new financial reality.
Couples Preparing for Retirement
A conversation starter about expectations, priorities, relationships and what each person wants from the years ahead.

A Central New York Perspective on Retirement
I'm a retired executive, author, and longtime Central New Yorker. After more than 30 years in corporate sales and marketing, I retired at 57 and began writing about the experience of figuring out what comes next.
I've been encouraged by the local interest in this conversation.
I was featured on WSYR's Bridge Street discussing A New Game Without a Scoreboard and the challenges of the retirement transition, and my work has also been featured in CNY 55 Plus Magazine.
Through my writing and speaking, I'm less interested in telling people how to retire than in encouraging more honest conversations about what retirement can actually feel like.
